Sometimes in large organizations, it might happen or sometimes can be difficult for the administrator to know whose computer is whose ! So this little trick will be useful in renaming My Computer to the computer name of your choice, allowing you to easily see which computer you are Logged On to. You can do this by using a trick to rename the My Computer of any computer.

Here is the trick to rename My Computer.


  • Open the Registry Editor by clicking Start >> Run >> regedt32 >> OK.
  • Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}.
  • Rename the value named “LocalizedString” to “LocalizedString.orig”.
  • Create a new REG_EXPAND_SZ value named “LocalizedString”, and set the value to “%computer-name%”. Set your computer name in “%computer-name%” of your choice.
  • Exit the registry editor, Right Click on your desktop and Click Refresh. The My Computer icon should now be renamed to the name you specified.
